Tecology ApS
AI startup Tecology has developed a successful platform for gauging biodiversity across any biotope. Using a portable camera paired with an insect-luring "flower plate," the device autonomously identifies and counts insects, delivering deep insights into local species variety, whether deployed on a city rooftop or in an open field.
Challenge
While Tecology's existing device had proven reliable and effective, it was somewhat cumbersome to assemble and fragmented, relying on custom 3D-printed parts paired with aluminum profiles. Furthermore, with a new computing platform ready to go, Tecology needed a more integrated design approach to bring the next generation to market. All in all, the goal was to reduce production time and cost while simplifying field assembly.
Our role
We were asked to design a revised, integrated physical concept for the device. One that prioritized ease of assembly and deployment and reduced production costs. Establishing a more rugged, on-brand aesthetic was also high on the priority list.
Process
Together with Tecology, we established the core foundations for the new device platform using their new hardware. The physical design centered on using sheet metal as much as possible, enabling Tecology to outsource more production stages while gaining the structural benefits of integrated fasteners and threads. We then pieced together the updated hardware into a package, balancing the new requirements for both cost and manufacturability.
Result
The final concept features a simple, weather-rugged sheet metal construction with a modular bracket system, allowing the unit to be mounted anywhere based on operational needs. Utilizing our prototype production network, we helped Tecology bring the concept to life, taking the first two prototype units from design to field deployment in just six months.
